LASIK is a very
safe and highly effective procedure. More then 98% of patients who have
laser vision correction will see 20/40 or better without glasses or
contacts, which is the legal requirement to drive without corrective
lenses in most states.
You must be realistic
in your expectations and be informed that there is no guarantee that
you will never need corrective lenses. LASIK does not correct presbyopia,
or the aging of the eye, which results in the need for reading glasses
in individuals over age 40.
One option for
addressing this problem is called "monovision" where the non-dominant
eye is left with a small degree of nearsightedness to improve near vision.
Dr. Knauf will discuss this with you at the time of your consultation.
As with any procedure
there are risks which Dr. Knauf will address with you in detail. Possible
complications include under-correction, over-correction, or induced
astigmatism. In most cases, a retreatment (or enhancement) can be performed
to "fine tune" your vision if necessary.
Some individuals
may see halos around lights at night. These typically resolve as the
eye heals.
Infection is extremely
rare after LASIK, but could cause scarring or blurred vision. Occasionally
the flap may become wrinkled or dislocated. Repositioning of the corneal
flap may be necessary, which may prolong the clearing of your vision.
