The first step
of the LASIK procedure involves the use of a precision automated instrument
known as the microkeratome. With this instrument, a thin flap is created
to gain access to the inner layers of the cornea.
The flap is then
folded back, allowing the inner corneal layers to be sculpted with the
excimer laser, and remains hinged to the cornea. This flap method helps
the eye recover more rapidly and reduces post-operative discomfort.

In the second
step of the procedure, the excimer laser is used to send computer-controlled
pulses of cold ultraviolet light to sculpt (reshape) the cornea one
microscopic layer at a time. Each pulse of the laser removes 1/4 micron
of tissue (1/500th thickness of a human hair)! Dr. Knauf utilizes the
most advanced scanning laser technology for precise correction of your
vision.

The protective
flap is then repositioned and healing begins almost immediately without
the use of stitches or patches. Some patients experience temporary mild
discomfort in the few hours immediately following LASIK which typically
resolves completely by the following morning.
Dr. Knauf will
see you the next day for a postoperative examination. This is an exciting
time as many patients are impressed with the ease of the procedure,
and their improved vision without glasses or contacts can be an exhilarating
experience!
